Bears?

While you most likely will never encounter a bear, it is NH and there are bears. Please keep all food and trash indoors.

June 2021 update: a mama bear and two cubs have been spotted in the woods behind the house.

The N.H. Fish and Game Department warns to keep your distance if you spot a bear. They recommend making noises such as clapping or talking to alert the bear of your presence. A bear may “slap the ground, huff, blow and chomp its teeth or rush you” if you are too close to the animal, according to the department’s website. If this happens, they say one should slowly back away from the bear while making eye contact and talking in a soft voice, but never run away or turn your back on the bear.

Roku TV

The main TV on the second floor is a Roku TV. We've installed Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, Disney+ and other streaming apps but feel free to add others and login to your streaming accounts. Our internet should be fast enough (100+ mbps) for you to stream simulataneously to all the devices you've brought with you. Oh, and the TV can swivel from the living room to the dining room so you can enjoy it in both.

The TV will be in Roku Guest Mode when you arrive. Guest Mode permits you to select dates on a calendar after which the streaming accounts (Netflix, HBO, etc.) you've logged into will automatically expire. You may also logout at any time or extend the dates you set. See the Roku Guest Mode link for details.

Music

The Roku TV speakers double as bluetooth speakers. Yay! Here are instructions for pairing your phone to the TV speakers.

We'd suggest, however, using the Spotify, Pandora and other music apps on the Roku TV. The interface will show album art and as mentioned in the Roku TV section, the Roku Guest Mode will automatically sign you out of your music apps (all TV apps) when you leave or earlier if you choose.

There is a small, black OontZ bluetooth speaker in the dining room on the white table near the cable modem (or wherever it was left last).

Wood Stove, Fireplace

There is firewood under a tarp in front of the house. Help yourself :) Some kindling, to help you get a fire started, is in a metal bucket next to the wood stove. Feel free to collect small twigs from the woods behind the house if you need more kindling. Please only fill the metal wood stove half full with wood. This will ensure enough air circulation for a smoke-free fire. A fire extinquisher, fire tools and gloves are near the wood stove.

  1. Open the damper (chimney vent inside the stove) by pulling forward the top-left lever on the side of the stove. Open the front glass door and peek inside the stove to make sure the damper at the top is open.
  2. Open the air intake lever (small silver ball on end) located near the bottom of the left side of the stove by pushing it towards the back of the stove. If you need to, slightly crack open the ash tray to permit air to rush in and feed the fire when you're having a hard time starting it.
  3. Place a small amount of kindling (or paper) and a small log or two in the stove.
  4. Come on baby, light my fire.
  5. Once the fire has burned a while and produced some hot coals, add larger logs.
  6. Close (or open) the air intake lever to control the flow of air to the fire.
  7. Do not operate the stove with the glass front door open.

To extinguish the fire, open the air intake by pushing it back toward the back of the stove. This will increase the flow of air into the stove so it burns out faster. There is no quick way to stop a wood stove from burning, however. You must wait for it to go out on it's own. Never pour water into the wood stove.

A quick 1 minute video on operating a wood stove, a wikiHow atricle for you if you've never used one and the complete manual for our stove.

To dispose of ashes, open the ash tray door when cool and slide out the ash tray. You can dump the ashes into the metal garbage can alongside the house in the driveway.

Propane Heater

There is a propane heater in the stairwell. You may use the controls on the top of the propane heater to adjust the temperature. Please turn this down to 58 when you leave.

Electric Heaters

Each bedroom and both bathrooms have electric heat thermostats to control the heat in that room. There is also a second floor thermostat (round) in the middle of the wall at the center of the house between the dining room and kitchen. The square thermostat on the same wall near the bottom right is old and will be removed.

Skylights

There are four skylights in the loft. Opening these in the summer will help cool off the house. Opening all the second floor windows, front and back door will also help.

The skylights have a velcro screen to keeps bugs out.

To open the skylight, pull the bar at the top down at a 45 degree angle to the window. You'll have to give it a tug as it has a tight seal.
See what the handle looks like in the open position if you're unsure how to pull the handle.

You can open the window until it touches the screen that keeps bugs out to provide the most airflow, but after cooling down the house you should use the pin slider to lock the window cracked open so it doesn't blow open thereby knocking the screen off the velcro.

The skylight windows have blinds in them. Pull the small tab at the top of the window to pull the blind down. You can lock the blind open at different lengths by latching it into the small cut-outs on the side frame.

Central Vacuum

We'll clean up after you leave, but please feel free to use the central vacuum if you'd like. The hose is hanging in the closest under the stairs. There are attachments in the bin hanging on the door and a push broom attachment in there as well. The hose outlets are at the bottom of the stairs on the first floor, to the left of the bathroom on the second floor, and in the tall wood pillar by the left railing in the loft.

Loft Couch-Bed

The red couch in the loft folds down into a full bed. Push the backrest forward, down toward the seat, and it will then unfold all the way flat into a bed. When flat, you may also fold the side edge of the couch up so that it turns into a long chaise on which you can sit back and look out the window at the mountain view.

Laundry

There is a washer and dryer in the downstairs hallway behind the orange doors. Push the doors in to open. Feel free to use the detergent there. Please empty lint trap and turn dials to off when done. Update: Washer door handle is broken. We are working to repair. You can still use, you just need to tug hard on the handle to open, but also risk the the door not opening at all if the handle breaks. So please use at your own risk until it is fixed. Sorry and thank you.

Games, Papergoods & Serving Dishes

The long white cabinets in the dining room house games, papergoods and serving dishes. Push the doors in to open. There is a large crockpot in the loft shelf area.

Outdoor hose

There is an outdoor water spigot on the left side of the house. If the hose is not connected it will be behind the house. There is a water on/off knob located in the closet in the house straight as you walk in the front door. It is the blue knob located at back top of the closet. Please turn the water off in the house after you're done with the outiside spigot so the water can't be turned on from outside the house if no one is home. Thanks!

Trash Disposal

There is a black trash barrel under the stairs. Please place the kitchen trash bags in this barrel and we'll dispose of them for you after your stay. Do not leave any trash outside as it will attract bears.

Recycling

We have recycling barrels at the bottom of the stairs to help you sort your recycling. Please use separate bins for #1, #2, all other #s, and glass. Thank you for recycling!

Check Out Process

We hate to see you go, but all good things must end...until we see you again.

  1. Make sure the fire is completely out. Leave the damper open if you're not sure.
  2. Empty your items from the refrigerator.
  3. Place trash in black trash barrel under the stairs.
  4. Close and lock all the windows.
  5. Shut off all lights.
  6. Lock all doors as you exit.

We hope you enjoyed your NH home and we hope you'll visit again.

Thank you for staying with us. If we can improve on anything at all please email us at suggestions@fivefiveludwig.com.

Thanks again and safe travels.
